NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Stocks pared gains but remained firmly in positive territory headed into the long holiday weekend on strength across the materials, capital goods and financial sectors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by 24 points, or 0.2%, at 12,427. The S&P 500 was higher by 4 points, or 0.3%, at 1329, and the Nasdaq was ahead by 9 points, or 0.3%, at 2791.
