[News] SHINee's Jonghyun will no longer be participating in Immortal Song 2

Earlier, we reported that KBS was coming up with a new singing variety show with an all idol cast titled “Immortal Song 2.” Although a tentative line-up was released earlier, producers have recently confirmed a final six-member line-up.

On May 4th, PD Kwon Jae Young tweeted, “Changmin, Hyorin, Yoseob, Min, Yesung, and IU have all come together. If they compete with a song by Shim Soo Bong… I think it’d be fun. Have fun kids, don’t be too nervous.”

A representative from KBS confirmed through Newsen, “SHINee’s Jonghyun will not be able to join the program due to conflicting schedules. We are currently in discussion with 2PM’s Junsu to be added in later.”

The first recording will be held on May 16th. The pilot episode is currently scheduled for June.

[NEWS] SM Entertainment might hold 'SM Town Live World Tour' in South America this July

SNSD might be travelling to the ‘Land of Passion’ South America this summer.

SNSD and other SM Entertainment artistes including BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior, SHINee, f(x), etc might possibly be going on a South American tour this July. According to an official from the music industry, there is a plan for SM Entertainment artistes to have a concert in South American countries such as Brazil, Chile, etc in July. The South American concerts will be part of the ‘SM Town Live World Tour’ kicked off last year.

SM’s plan to tour South America was also fueled by the artistes huge popularity in the region. In February this year, in a survey entitled ‘Which artiste will have a concert in Brazil?’conducted via a TV broadcast, SM Entertainment artistes, namely Super Junior, BoA, SNSD and SHINee grabbed the top 4 spots. In addition to that, in November last year, Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (KOFICE) conducted a survey to find out Brazilian fans’ choice of famous Korean singers. The results – Super Junior in 1st place, SHINee, BoA and SNSD were in 2nd, 4th and 5th place respectively.

Music industry official said, “SM’s ripple effect is really great. Not only in US, Japan, China, the artistes have managed to make impact even to Europe and South America and this is such a rare phenomenon for Korean artistes. Isn’t this the way of the true ‘World Stars’?”.

[News] Europe Has No Dancing Idols - Kpop Boom in Europe (Interview with SHINee & SM Deputy Kim Youngmin)

People’s interest in the Korean wave in Europe and its prospects is increasing after French K-pop fans did a flash mob in front of Le musee de l’ouvre on May 1. Their slogan was “One More Date” for the SM Town Live in paris scheduled to be on June 10. SM Entertainment is at the center of this unexpected Korean Wave heat. For it was through SM’s decision to have a concert in Paris that Europe’s K-pop love rose to surface. On April 20, idol group SHINee had a meeting with members of a French K-pop fanclub who visited Seoul.

We interviewed SM Deputy Kim Youngmin and SHINee on May 3, about a month left until Korean Wave’s “Europe Landing.” Kim has been leading SM’s globalization as deputy since 2005.

- Did you expect K-pop will be this popular in Europe?

Kim: Never. I thought we could sell 6,700 tickets for a concert, but didn’t expect the tickets would be sold out in 15 minutes and that people will protest…

SHINee: It’s extraordinary. About one year ago, Korean friends in Europe said, “My classmate wants your autograph.” I thought, We have some popularity in Europe, but didn’t know it’s this much.

- What do you think Europeans find attractive in K-pop?

SHINee: They seem to think it’s different. We heard there are no dancing idols in Europe. We can proudly say Korean singers have everything from singing skills to fashion and dancing. Our albums are also made with the global market as our target. Some of our songs are from Europe, and we dance to the songs. I think that’s why young women in Europe are attracted to us.

Kim: Singers with perfect skills after years of training, a producing system targeting the global market, and marketing using Youtube and SNS, all of these combined in harmony contributed to the success.

- Have you monitored the Korean Wave in Europe?

Kim: A team of about 20 people have checked responses on Youtube and SNS. We pay enormous attention to music videos and video clips on Youtube. A music video is uploaded in the SM Entertainment channel on Youtube before a new album is released. The viewer counts of K-pop music videos on Youtube amount to 2 billion.

- What do you think you can gain through K-pop’s launch into the European market?

Kim: The size of the European market is estimated to be 7 trillion Won. It’s larger than the US (6 trillion), Japan (4 trillion), and China (1 trillion). But our goal is not to be ranked on the European music chart and to sell albums. We aim to attract people’s attention to the Asian music market through K-pop boom in the Us and Europe and to build the ground for Korea’s future as an Asian Hollywood.

- What is your special strategy for the European market?

Kim: To begin with, we’ll try to promote K-pop’s excellent quality rather than to conquer the European market. I want to establish K-pop’s status as one of the popular genres in Europe’s main music industry.

SHINee: From the singer’s perspective, the key seems to harmonize K-pop with the local culture. The French reporter said at our meeting with French fans, “You all look alike.” We think each member should develop a more distinct character if we debut in Europe.

- There is a view this is only “temporary enthusiasm by a minority.”

Kim: In the SNS world, what starts in a minor fandom can spread to the whole in an instant. We’ll have to wait and see about Europe, but K-pop’s competitive power is being acknowledged in the whole world.

SHINee: It appealed to a minority in the past, but we see the number of fans increasing with our own eyes. It is a genre that doesn’t exist in Europe. Our music covers a broader range of sensibility than the band-centered European music.

- Europe experienced J-pop, and our singers sing songs composed by Europeans. Don’t you think these factored in the boom?

Kim: That’s possible. But it’s not for European debuts that we buy songs by foreign composers, but because we want to get the best songs regardless of nationality. In case of J-pop, there is certainly a preference for Japanese culture in Europe, but the musical side is not outstanding.

- How would you rate K-pop’s possibility of success in Europe?

SHINee: We do not know about the possibility of success, but we’d like to (debut). It will be fun. The concept of our music and dance is not totally different from the local culture, so we’ll be able to make better contents out of a mixture of Europe’s excellent music and ours.

Kim: We are most rewarded when we succeed in an uncertain market condition. We don’t have to overstretch ourselves, but Europe is a market worth a try. SHINee will have a European debut showcase in the Abbey Road Studios, called a “Sacred Site of Beatles,” on June 19 after the concert in Paris. We need a long-term strategy, but the current K-pop boom can be semi-permanent if we don’t cling to the ranking in Europe.

[News] Jonghyun confirmed to be in Immortal Masterpiece 2

It is true that "Immortal Masterpiece 2" looks similar to "I Am Singer" of MBC Our Sunday Night. But the two programs have different formats. If "I Am Singer" is a survival game, "Immortal Masterpiece 2" will select only the winner.

They are also different in selection process. "I Am Singer" decides the ranking of the contestants with the help of audience judges, but in "Immortal Masterpiece 2" the “legend singer” who participated in the day’s filming will judge the idol contestants’ singing skills.

However, the program may lose its tension without elimination.

The production team is planning to make the competition serious enough to compensate for it. In the first season of "Immortal Masterpiece 2" the MCs imitated the old hit songs of “legend singers” to entertain viewers.

According to Kwon Jaeyoung PD, the second season will show serious stages with idol contestants singing and being judged like in real contests. He said, “The singers don’t have to worry about being eliminated, but as the contestants are all peers, they are already feeling competitive.”

SHINee Jonghyun, 2AM Changmin, BEAST Yoseop, and Sista Hyorin are confirmed to be in the season two. The production team is casting other idol vocals. The first episode will be filmed on May 16.

The “legend singer” guest for the first episode has already been cast. Kwon PD hinted, “You will be surprised,” and added “Wait until it is aired to find out who the guest is.”

[News] SHINee Jonghyun, 2PM Junsu, 2AM Changmin, Beast Yoseob, Sistar Hyorin battle!!

SHINee’s Jonghyun, 2PM’s Junsu, 2AM’s Changmin, B2AST’s Yoseop, and Sistar Hyorin will have singing battles in a program. The title of this program to be aired on Saturday in KBS 2TV is . It is an idol version of the of Happy Sunday. As the original one re-introduced old hit songs by sunbae singers, idol singers will sing old-time hit songs and the sunbae singers will decide the winner. The point seems to be how well they interpret the old songs in their own styles.

KBS Kwon Jaeyoung PD said, “I got goosebumps watching idol singers in last year’s Gayo Grand Festival. There are so many good idol singers. I think it is good for both singers and viewers to have a program that offers a chance to listen to their songs.”

As to the view that the program format is similar to that of of MBC Sunday Night, he said, “If you expect to see an idol version of , you’ll be disappointed. For there is no ranking or elimination in the . I think there is no measuring music in scores.” Idol singers have been labeled “3 Second Singers” as they have to share parts with other members in a big group. This will be a good chance for them to prove their singing ability.

How did the cast idol singers respond to the suggestion? Kwon PD says (2AM Changmin part not translated), the responses were divided. It is true that it can be a burden to the singers who are already loved by the public. But it is expected they will be able to focus on their performances without the pressure of a survival game. Besides the singers mentioned above, CN Blue Jeong Yonghwa, FT Island Lee Hongki, Super Junior Kyuhyun and Yesung have expressed their intention to participate in the program. He added, “This will be a good chance for fans to watch their idols grow up through the program.”

will be aired in May~June. For better performances, the stage will have a live band. The program will also show the back stage scenes of idols arranging and practicing their songs.

[Info] The Classic Idols

There was a time when music critics considered idols’ CDs “untouchables.” They did not want to review the disposable and consumer-oriented music, and there was nothing much to talk about. However, there have been signs of change. Now we are in an age in which people should be “sorry not to be cool” if they are still prejudiced about idol music. The improved quality of idols’ music has contributed to the change. Songs made by young composers like Kushi, Kenzie, Brave Brothers, Shinsadong Tiger, Jinu (Hitchhiker) are no doubt well-made, and there is no turning away from such well-made music. What idol CDs do music critics think are the most valuable? We asked each of 10 music critics, who are working actively in the field, to select 5 CDs, and the following is the list of the top 5 CDs.

1. Brown Eyed Girls (2009)

2. 2NE1 1st Mini Album (2009)

3. BoA (2002)

4. Taeyang (2008)

5. SHINee (2009)

At the time of “Noona Is So Pretty” or “Love Like Oxygen,” SHINee just had the image of “idols tailored for noonas.” At least until they sang “Ring Ding Dong.” If their previous songs were in the line of Chris Brown, SHINee’s music since the end of 2009 has turned closer to Li’l John or Ludacris. With their music style change from gentle R&B pop to dirty South hiphop beat, SHINee have transformed from asexual boys to self-confident men. Especially Ring Ding Dong and Jojo are songs impressive enough to be counted as good examples of adapting African rhythm and 1980s house beat into a twenty-first style. It illustrates the range of references Yoo Youngjin and Kenzie used.
